The word meme first appeared in Richard Dawkins’ 1976 book, The Selfish Gene. In the book, Dawkins tried to explain how ideas spread from person to person as easily as disease and genes are spread from parent to child (through reproduction). He took the meme from the Greek root mimeograph which means to imitate, and he said that memes can be thought of as the smallest unit of culture that spreads throughout a population.
